Carolyn’s Old Fashioned Eggnog
Ok, so I’ve NEVER had the desire to taste eggnog. Just the hearing the name as a child was off putting. *sigh* Stubbornness and my inability to try this holiday concoction has left me with years wasted! *jumping* I could’ve been drinking this all along!
I finally get what all the rave is about and boooyyyy let me tell you – this can be as strong or as light as you like! This particular recipe is from my grandmother’s handwritten cookbook. I paired it with her Holiday Lizzies (cookies). To stay true to her form, I actually inherited and decided to use her 1988 Black & Decker “Spatula Smart Mixer” !! It still works great!
Just in case your bar tending skills aren’t up to par (mine aren’t either), here is what you need for this recipe:
– 6 egg yolks
– 1 cup powdered sugar
– 2/3 cup of Bourbon (I used Gentlemen’s Jack because its my favorite)
– 2/3 cup of Brandy (I used E&J VSOP)
– 2 cups COLD milk
– 1 pint of heavy cream, whipped
– freshly ground nutmeg
Gradually beat in sugar.
Slowly pour in brandy then bourbon, while beating constantly.
Let rest about 10 minutes. Gradually beat in milk.
Refrigerate, covered, until very chilled – 3hrs or longer.
To serve: Pour mixture in to a chilled punch bowl. Gently fold in whipped cream just to blend.
Grate or sprinkle nutmeg over the top.
*sip & spin*
