The Uniform: My Capsule Closet
“It might sound crazy, but I’ve decided to wear a uniform everyday.”
This is what I told my sister one afternoon while we were chatting it up about our random goings-on. She scoffed, “a uniform? What do you mean a uniform? Cant you wear what you want to work?” Of course, I can wear any professional business attire, but a uniform would make it so much easier in the morning.
Like most people, I have a closet full of clothes. Every shade of every color, mismatched styles and seasons and each day I open the doors and shudder at the thought of deciding what to wear. Don’t get me wrong, I love clothes. For my job though, it gets exhausting and its not as important to be trendy, but more important to be appropriate.
I feel like if I take on a minimalist approach to my work fashion, it will save me a headache and ease the woes of my pocketbook over the long run. Therefore, I decided to come up with a “capsule wardrobe,” which is just a paired-down approach to dressing. I would have pieces, to include a few skirts, a couple pairs of pants and dresses that could be updated with other items. I love a good cardigan, and jackets and blazers will add a little pizzazz along with accessories.
Some of my favorite people have taken on a minimalist approach as well, the most famous man in America. President Obama, is known to wear only blue or grey suits. It makes the morning so much easier right? In the 80’s, designer Donna Karan commercialized the idea of the capsule wardrobe with her collection ‘7 Easy Pieces,’ then Steve Jobs, and even Mark Zuckerberg knew the idea of simplicity serves you well when you have bigger things to take on.
In an effort to KISS (Keep it Stupid Simple), I decided on 5 white shirts, and 9 varying Black, Navy and Gray bottoms. I need to snag or sew a few dress for Spring and Summer.
My Capsule Closet Uniform:
1 Gray Pencil Skirt, calf length
1 Navy Pencil Skirt, calf length
1 Black Pencil Skirt, knee length
4 pair of slacks: black, navy and 2 gray
5 White Cotton Buttoned Shirts
This gave me enough variety, but made it very simple each day. I telework on Friday, so I wear PJs on those days. *giggles* My shirts came from H&M, my black slacks are from GAP and the grey and navy are from GAP and New York & Co.
I’m in the market for a camera, but Check out what my February looked like:
As you can see, I mixed and matched, added jackets and blazers and threw in accessories for spice! What I wear to work should not be my first challenge of the day. Save that brain power for the board room!
