5 Minutes of Om: Yoni Steams
So this post is speaking directly to the ladies.
Ladies, are we doing all we should to make sure we are healthy inside and out?
Are we taking heed to ancient remedies and health practices for our Yoni?
My Yoni, Drea?
You know, your VAGINA!
Don’t get all bent out of shape. This isn’t going to be some raunchy post. For this 5 Minutes of Om, I wanted to talk about women doing more to take care of one of the most vital parts of their body. Your vagina is an essential part of being a woman and keeping her healthy should be optimal.
Vaginal steams are, in the basic sense, a form of hydrotherapy.
What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the use of water to revitalize, maintain, and restore health. Hydrotherapy treatments include saunas, steam baths, foot baths, sitz baths, and the application of cold and hot water compresses.
Father Sebastian Kneipp, a 19th century Bavarian monk, is said to be the father of hydrotherapy. Kneipp believed that disease could be cured by using water to eliminate waste from the body. Hydrotherapy is popular in Europe and Asia, where people “take the waters” at hot springs and mineral springs. In North America, it is often recommended as self-care by naturopathic doctors. – Alternative medicine
Hydrotherapy begins with home remedies, but it also includes sophisticated methods for facilitating the body’s natural healing process. It’s just about the simplest cure imaginable, so basic we scarcely call it medicine: A bag of ice on a bruise. A hot bath after a long day. A cold washcloth on a feverish forehead. A warm water bottle on a sore neck.
We all know I love doing things naturally and things I can do at home.
Personally, I never knew about this practice. I actually just started doing my own vaginal steams last summer. I found out about them as I was reading a thread that came up in my travel group about some people who had experienced them while in SE Asia. I was intrigued so after some research, I did my own at home and have been doing them every since.
Throughout history, many women found yoni steams to have the following effects:
- Significantly reduce pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation.
- Decrease menstrual flow as well as reduce dark purple or brown blood at the onset or end of menses.
- Regulate irregular or absent menstrual cycles.
- Increase fertility
- Speed healing and tone the reproductive system after birth.
- Treat uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse and endometriosis.
- Assist with the repair of a vaginal tear, episiotomy or C-section scar.
- Assist with the healing of hemorrhoids.
- Treat chronic vaginal/yeast infections, and works to maintain healthy odor.
- Relieve symptoms of menopause.
- Detoxify the womb and remove toxins from the body.

How does a Vaginal Steam work?
A vaginal steam is done like a facial or nasal steam, except a woman allows the steam from a pot with boiled water and herbs to reach the outer lips of her vagina. The tissues of the vagina are exceptionally porous and absorbent.
When the herbs are placed in the hot water, their medicinal properties are released and carried to the surface of the skin and inside the vagina, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream and uterus, her womb. The herbal steam increases circulation and cleanses the reproductive system, allowing it to shed unnecessary build-up.
*Please Note: These steams are not for use while pregnant because some herbs can induce labor and do not try this if you have an IUD.
How I Do My Steams
These steams can be done in the privacy of your own home, just make sure you have at least 2 ½ hours of uninterrupted time.
**Simply steep approximately one cup dry herbs (or 1 quart of fresh herbs) in 1 gallon of hot water for 10 minutes.
**Remove your clothing from the waist down, and find a quiet place to relax with the steam below your bottom for 40 minutes. You can sit over a slotted chair or stool. Be sure the water isn’t too hot, so as to avoid burns.
**Wrap blankets around you from the waist down. This way all the steam goes to the intended place.
**After the time period has passed, lie down with your blankets for about an hour. The herbs will continue to work while you rest.
Which Herbs To Use:
After reading various websites, I found that different herbs are used for different things. So based on the use, that’s how I created my mix, which does include some of these and more, like Rose Petals. I got them at my local health food store.
For the urinary and reproductive organs: Red Raspberry leaf, Motherwort, Peony, Red Clover and Dong Quai.
Herbs that are anti microbial and promote fertility: Basil, Oregano, Lavender, Rosemary, Marigold, Garden Sage, and Peppermint, Ginger, Cinnamon and Lemon Balm.
Astringent and cleansing herbs: Motherwort, Witch Hazel, Yarrow flowers, Chaparral or St. John’s Wort.
