Bikini’s in Winter!
Bikini’s in Winter?!
Well yeah, if your traveling like me! LOL
Blame my Wanderlust!
For Thanksgiving, I headed to Mexico and I knew I was going to soak up some sun and relax on the beach while there. For this trip, I felt like I wanted a new bathing suit.
Now of course I could have just ordered one, but you all know I love sewing things for my trips!
I took a bra pattern and made a pattern from some undies and Voilà, instant bikini!
To make a cute bikini top, follow the directions for this FREE MAYA bra pattern, by Ana who lives in Romania. I altered the pattern just a smidgen and took away the straps.
Below, I will show you how to make the bikini bottoms using a pair of undies that fit you perfectly. SN: This tutorial can also be used to make underwear of course.
For this project you will need:
Underwear (the style you want your bikini bottoms to be – ones that can be cut to make a pattern)
½ yard Fabric (Nylon, Spandex/ Lycra or Jersey)
1 small piece of 100% Cotton Fabric (this is for the seat lining)
Lingerie Elastic 5/16” W 1-1/2yd-White
First you want to deconstruct your old underwear. Remove the elastic from the top and the leg holes and set aside for later. Next remove the lining from the seat of the underwear and set it aside as well.
Now trace these on pattern paper, butchers paper, wrapping paper or whatever you use to make patterns. Be sure to add a ½ inch seam allowance all around.
Once you have your pattern cut out, lay it out on your fabric. **Be sure that the pattern is going is the proper direction so that the most stretch is from side to side.**
Now lets put it all together.
First, lay the front, right side up.
Next, lay the back, right side down.
Then, lay the lining on top of that, right side down.
All the long edges should be matched up.
Using a zigzag or stretch stitch, sew along that line.
Now bring the lining piece toward the front of the bottoms and sew it down.
Next you want to sew the lining in place by stitching both sides of the lining to the bottoms.
On to the Elastic!
Using the elastic you cut off the old underwear, measure the length of your new pieces of elastic for the tops and both legs openings.
First we will attach the elastic to the leg openings.
Pin the elastic on both ends to the bottoms.
Next use a pin to attach the elastic to the middle of the bottoms.
Now using a zigzag stitch, sew the elastic to the bottoms. When you get to the pin near the seat/crotch area, leave a small lip of fabric on the edge of the elastic. This will make the stitching curl the fabric over the edge, creating a nice finished look. Also, be sure to PULL! Stretch that elastic in the crotch area to the max so it really cinches in. This way we will have no gaping. Nobody likes saggy bikini bottoms; yikes!
For the Finish…
First, attach the elastic to the top of either side of the bikini bottom.
Now with right sides together, sew each of the side seams of the bikini bottoms.
Finally, roll over the top and top stitch.
I hope you liked this tutorial.
